Everyone was a Bird (Dawn Chrous)
by Caro Williams
The visual element of this installation draws on early-morning recordings made on Salisbury Plain. The birdsong waveforms have been translated into metal, each delicate sound note marking a moment in the Dawn Chorus. These notes hang from ribbons threaded with hand-cut irrigation tubing; the strands link together like prayer beads and are suspended at varying heights on clear filament.
The work reflects on birds whose songs have already fallen silent, and those at risk of being lost including the skylark, nightingale and song thrush. Alongside a concern for the fragility of species, it aims to evoke the solace and quiet joy found in birdsong.
The title comes from a line in Siegfried Sassoon’s WWI poem Everyone Sang.
